We’re not going to pretend that Shostakovich’s Tenth Symphony is a walk in the park. Written after Stalin died, it’s an understandably dark and powerful reflection on his rule. It speaks to the heart and is, at times, utterly terrifying. Fellow Russian Tchaikovsky provides a counterpoint. Memorable and meltingly beautiful, and with some of the most famous chords in musical history – only included at the suggestion of the composer’s cousin. We’re glad he listened to the feedback.
